Summary: I was blown away by this great book, from its cover to the last page. It incompasses everything in the universe from artificial intelligence to shellshock and everything in between. The only other book I've read that comes close to this was A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WORLD, and even that one pales by comparison.
Richard Gregory is probably the smartest man alive and it's hard to imagine how he put this book together, gleaning all that he did from the different sources. And don't be put off, thinking this is going to be some high-brow complicated mess that you can't get through. It's extremely well done and accessible to almost everyone. That's not to say that it won't have you thinking, but the great thing is that you can pick this up, read a few pages, and leave it. You don't have to read it from cover to cover.
The most fascinating part for me was the section on psychology. This book can be used by the college professor and layman alike. I would like to say that I found something wrong with it, but alas, it's pretty much perfect in every way.

Summary: This is a brilliant piece of writing that inspite of drawing from so many sources does not loose its focus nor does it get burdened by any academic jargons. A book that can be returned to again and again for a clearer view of our own minds and of those around us. I feel compelled to compare it to a "Sophie's World" for adults. The many "intimate histories" could actually be turned into brilliant cinema stories/scripts. It was a book I have been looking for all my life I think.

Summary: The Lucifer Effect is a thoroughly fascinating and scholarly account of the situational forces that compel individuals to act without due thought and regard for the feelings of their fellow human beings. It contains one of the most detailed treatments of the author's Stanford Prison Experiments I've ever read, complete with details unavailable elsewhere. That treatment alone justifies reading the book. The arguments are compelling and convincing, and illustrated with copious examples of real world situations in which perfectly normal people have gone 'to the dark side'.

The sole criticism I have of the book is that the lengthy section on the Abu Ghraib scandals contains too much editorialising, especially in the sections where the author goes through the chain of command apportioning blame. While the author is not especially detached throughout the text, in this particular instance it veers off into bias in a way that jars.

That's a fairly minor objection though, and I thoroughly recommend the book to anyone who wants to understand a bit more about how human nature is only part of the moral equation.
