Summary: This is not the best German text available, but it is one of the most affordable. It is not a book for current colloquial German -- as any book teaching contemporary English written in the 1960s would contain phrases that would sound like a bad television show on a low-quality network, so too does this book contain some turns of phrase and expressions that are out-dated and no longer used.
However, as a book to learn a very basic vocabulary, basic verb and sentence structures, and a gradual introduction to German, it isn't that bad. Hopefully the reader will be inspired from here to go on to other texts that will enhance and refine their language skills; however, this provides a non-threatening and gentle entrance to the German language, and for that, it gets some stars in the rating.
It also includes through the course of the piece reading lessons that include conversations and paragraphs, rather than relying solely on disconnected sentences (as some language texts will do on occasion). Another great advantage this book has is that it is intended for self-study -- all the answers are contained in the appendix in the back of the book (so many grammars are great when it comes to providing exercises and drills, but unless you are enrolled in the class you won't necessarily know if you've done them correctly).
As a stand-alone, only-resource book, this text has serious limitations. Taken as part of a beginning to the language, it has some uses.

Summary: Even 35 years after it was written, The Death and Life of Great American Cities remains the classic book on how cities work and how urban planners and others have naively destroyed functioning cities. It is widely known for its incisive treatment of those who would tear down functioning neighborhoods and destroy the lives and livelihoods of people for the sake of a groundless but intellectually appealing daydream.

But although many see it as a polemic against urban planning, the best parts of it, the parts that have endeared it to many who love cities, are quite different. Death and Life is, first of all, a work of observation. The illustrations are all around us, she says, and we must go and look. She shows us parts of the city that are alive -- the streets, she says, are the city that we see, and it is the streets and sidewalks that carry the most weight -- and find the patterns that help us not merely see but understand. She shows us the city as an ecology -- a system of interactions that is more than merely the laying out of buildings as if they were a child's wooden blocks.
But observation can mean simply the noting of objects.

Ms. Jacobs writes beautifully, lovingly, of New York City and other urban places. Her piece "The Ballet of Hudson Street" is both an observation of events on the Greenwich Village street where she lived and a prose poem describing the comings and goings of the people, the rhythms
of the shopkeepers and the commuters and others who use the street.
In this day when "inner city" is a synonym for poverty and hopelessness, it is important to be reminded that cities are literally the centers of civilization, of business, of culture. This is just as true today as it was in the early 1960s when this was written.

Summary: When Isabel Archer, a bright and independent young American, makes her first trip to Europe in the company of her aunt, Mrs. Touchett, who lives outside of London in a 400-year-old estate, she discovers a totally different world, one which does not encourage her independent thinking or behavior and which is governed by strict rules of behavior. This contrast between American and European values, vividly dramatized here, is a consistent theme in James's novels, one based on his own experiences living in the US and England. In prose that is filled with rich observations about places, customs, and attitudes, James portrays Isabel's European coming-of-age, as she discovers that she must curb her intellect and independence if she is to fit into the social scheme in which she now finds herself.
Isabel Archer, one of James's most fully drawn characters, has postponed a marriage in America for a year of travel abroad, only to discover upon her precipitate and ill-considered marriage to an American living in Florence, that it is her need to be independent that makes her marriage a disaster. James packs more information into one paragraph than many writers do in an entire chapter. Distanced and formal, he presents psychologically realistic characters whose behavior is a direct outgrowth of their upbringing, their conflicts resulting from the differences between their expectations and the reality of their changed settings. The subordinate characters, Ralph Touchett, Pansy Osmond, her suitor Edward Rosier, American journalist Henrietta Stackpole, Isabel's former suitor Caspar Stackpole, and Lord Warburton, whose love of Isabel leads him to court Pansy, are as fascinating psychologically and as much a product of their own upbringing as is Isabel.
As the setting moves from America to England, Paris, Florence, and Rome, James develops his themes, and as Isabel's life becomes more complex, her increasingly difficult and emotionally affecting choices about her life make her increasingly fascinating to the reader. James's trenchant observations about the relationship between individuals and society and about the effects of one's setting on one's behavior are enhanced by the elegance and density of his prose, making this a novel one must read slowly--and savor. Summary: P.D.James shines here with this novel which contains everything needed in a murder mystery.
Gripping from start to finish, this novel sees Dalgliesh caught up in an investigation which has turned personal - he knew the victim. There are many twists and turns here as they try to unravel the clues and evidence to point them to a ruthless and sadistic killer. There are many sub-plots in the novel which try to lead you astray, but ultimately it comes down to one ruthless murderer. Kate Miskin features heavily in this story and a great part of the novel involves her personal life which we have not seen until now.
A truly thrilling cerebral mystery, which delivers the goods intelligently and VERY Englishly! One of my personal favourites which I read again and again.

Summary: For 25 years, this has been the definitive volume to learn from, refer to and quote from. Jellicoe's laconic manner and brisk editing is still fairly popular throughout the western world; the book still a best seller everywhere!
However, it is not particularly appealing to the layman. To my mind, for the sake of promoting the importance of the built landscape as well as the preservation of the natural world, a new edition might be useful. Less on caves - more on the new parks of Europe. Less B&W - more colour. Less about too many - more about the real progenitors.
Jellicoe died in 1995, the year in which the book was revised for the third and, probably, last time. Even if it still looks like a 70's monumental, monochromatic flagship, it is still a mindbomb!

Summary: The Anarchists by James Joll is an informative and interesting book which deals with the origins and the history of the Anarchist (anti)political movements in Europe and briefly in the U.S.A. Joll comes forth as an objective reporter on this very misunderstood conception. At times he is critical of the movement but does paint a fairly unbiased picture. Joll explores the variety of ideals and schools of thought which characteized the anarchist movements of the past. Joll's book would be a good read for anyone who thinks that the term anarchy refers merely to chaos.

Summary: This book about Napoleon is really enjoyable. The book chronogically tells about Napoleon's history, and on the way, deeply analyzes it. The author succsessfully does this. There are some maps and diagrams, which is just enough. The book starts the introduction generally, talking about things like The Thermodarian Reaction, and the Directory, and so on. The author has very good points at some places. This book is more enjoyable for people who are interested about Napoleon's regime, and I believe this includes students.

Summary: This book gives you an A to Z of design. It is easy to use and full of information. It has a timeline of events from design history for a variety of countries, including the UK and the USA. It is useful for learning about who designed what, but less useful for design ideas. The book is informative but is not helpful tips, just history. This could of course lead to ideas of your own in a variety of design, including products and interiors.

Summary: Things in life happen, "facts occur" so accidentally or hasardous that a concourse of circumstances is so very much "particular", so curious, that one tries to look for a decent explanation. A cause with a VERY GOOD REASON however, is rarely found.
Carl Gustav JUNG (1875-1961), the only competitor as to me for "the genius of the 20th century", esteemed title that went to his friend Albert EINSTEIN, has studied this matter during some decades. By examinating this phenomenon of accidental facts that appear, he has been able to conclude that we may speak here about liaisons, about ACAUSAL connections and conjunctions, "something" almost every human being knows about. HE CALLED THIS "SYNCHRONICITY". He also found out THAT THIS CANNOT REPLACE THE FACT OF THINKING, REFLECTING IN A "CAUSAL" WAY, that is by means of causal thoughts and reflections.
BUT, it is very well possible that "THIS PARTICULAR APPEARANCE" ADDS A NEW DIMENSION TO OUR PERCEPTION. Jung got convinced about this the longer the more, persuaded as he was, that there is "ONLY ONE CLASSIFICATION" that exists as well for the human psyche as for the living matter (= physical substance). In this sense synchronicity refers to a classification apparently arbitrary. The duality between PSYCHE and MATTER has a COMMON BASIS, FOUNDING: A UNITY OF EXISTENCE (already known by the alchemists like Paracelsus and his colleagues as well). This FOUNDING, FOUNDATION IS ACCENTUATED, EMPHASIZED by symptoms, synchronistic phenomenons THAT EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN the unconscious psyche as well as in matter. JUNG DEFINED THIS UNIQUE EXISTENCE AS THE "UNUS MUNDUS".
Very probably we will never be able to clarify this undivided unity, but WE ARE SURE NOW that the empirical world of phenomenons is founded one way or another ON A TRANSCENDENTAL BACKGROUND. IT IS THIS BACKGROUND - CAUSED BY SYNCHRONISTIC PHENOMENONS - THAT PENETRATES, APPEARS "ALL OF A SUDDEN" IN OUR CONSCIENT WORLD.
Of course we heard before about this ENORMOUS GENIUS from Switzerland, a lovable and decent, studious man, ex-friend and student of Sigmund FREUD, friend also - among many others - of James JOYCE and of Albert EINSTEIN. He was however not only a psychanalist by excellence, but also a very devoted scientist, a cultural giant (esteemed connoisseur of China and India, not at least concerning the eastern religions) AND - what far too little people know - a grand, great philosopher of the highest importance, a man who will influence manhood for a long time to come.
