Summary: This book was for a project about the 1960s and it was really useful. It has sections about all the different aspects of the swinging sixties. It shows all aspects of the decade, and presents a unique view of the time. It's a book full of pictures (not many words) and shows exactly what the decade was like!

Summary: A book about memory? Mnemonics, eh? Dull stuff... WRONG!!! This is just about the most engrossing scholarly work I have ever read. Quite apart from displaying a masterly grasp of her subject, which is far more interesting than I would have believed before reading the book, Yates throws fascinating light on a number of seemingly unrelated topics: the Roman art of rhetoric, the architecture of the Globe theatre, the foundations of Renaissance syncretism, the rise of the scientific method, the delightful irony of a patron saint of science turning out to be an arch-magician, psychological aspects of imagination... -- the list is a long one. However, for me, it is Yates' illumination of the profound relationship between the scientific method and earlier attempts at mastering the universe by magical means, that stands out as a single, most important aspect of the book. In fact, I would go as far as to say that no study of history and/or philosophy of science can be complete without acknowledging and exploring the relevant insights of "The Art of Memory". If you have any interest in human attempts to comprehend and control the universe, a well-thumbed copy of this book should be on your bookshelf!

Summary: Placing Bruno—both advanced philosopher and magician burned at the stake—in the Hermetic tradition, Yates's acclaimed study gives an overview not only of Renaissance humanism but of its interplay—and conflict—with magic and occult practices.
"Among those who have explored the intellectual world of the sixteenth century no one in England can rival Miss Yates. Wherever she looks, she illuminates. Now she has looked on Bruno. This brilliant book takes time to digest, but it is an intellectual adventure to read it. Historians of ideas, of religion, and of science will study it. Some of them, after reading it, will have to think again. . . . For Miss Yates has put Bruno, for the first time, in his tradition, and has shown what that tradition was."—Hugh Trevor-Roper, "New Statesman"
"A decisive contribution to the understanding of Giordano Bruno, this book will probably remove a great number of misrepresentations that still plague the tormented figure of the Nolan prophet."—Giorgio de Santillana, "American Historical Review"
"Yates's book is an important addition to our knowledge of Giordano Bruno. But it is even more important, I think, as a step toward understanding the unity of the sixteenth century."—J. Bronowski, "New York Review of Books"

Summary: An outstanding accomplishment by a writer who has given so much fresh understanding on this subject over the years. The real marvel is how anyone could do so much justice to an important review of such lives as those of John Dee, Pico Della Mirandola, Francesco Giorgi, Henry Cornelius Agrippa et al. This is a real gem and Dame Frances Yates shows the way yet again for the historians in rescuing such important figures from the shadowy world of Renaissance 'Magic'

Summary: When Autobiography Of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. With engaging candour, eloquence and wit, Paramahansa Yogananda narrates the inspiring chronicle of his life - the experiences of his remarkable childhood, encounters with many saints and sages during his youthful search throughout India for an illumined teacher, ten years of training in the hermitage of a revered yoga master and the thirty years that he lived and taught in America. He records as well his meetings with Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Luther Burbank, the Catholic stigmatist, Therese Neumann and other celebrated spiritual personalities of East and West. Also included is extensive material that he added after the first edition came out in 1946, with a final chapter on the closing years of his life. Autobiography Of a Yogi is at once a delightful account of an exceptional life and a profound introduction to the ancient science of Yoga and its tradition of meditation. Clearly explaining the subtle but definite laws behind the natural events of everyday life as well as the extraordinary events considered miraculous, the author reveals the scientific foundation underlying the great religious paths of both East and West. His absorbing life story thus becomes the background for a penetrating and unforgettable look at the ultimate mysteries of human existence. Considered a modern spiritual classic, this book has been translated into eighteen languages and is used as a text and reference work in numerous colleges and universities. A perennial best-seller since it was first published sixty years ago, it has found its way into the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

Summary: Banana Yoshimoto hat in Japan schon lange Kultstatus.

Summary: For those who have never been to Africa before, it can be difficult to imagine just how different the facilities are on the ground to those to which we have become used in Europe and North America. The vast majority of those who visit Africa do so without any adverse reactions except for loosening bowels. Nevertheless, because of the risks and the different health threats which are encountered in the region, self-diagnosis and basic self-treatment are crucial tools for the traveller, and this handy pocket-book is the perfect source of information for those in need. The guide is designed specifically with Africa in mind, so there is a specific and invaluable section with listings of medical facilities in every African country, from Algeria to Zimbabwe via Guinea-Bissau. There is also an illuminating section on local healers--or medicine men--and their potential benefits as providers of local remedies for local ailments. This is all quite apart from voluminous information on virtually every disease imaginable, detailed advice on which malarial prophylaxis are advisable for which regions, sections catering for specifically male or female travellers, children and older travellers, advice on how to combat mental health problems, and intelligent and lucid advice for both before and after your trip. With contributions from many doctors experienced in the field, it is a book that everyone travelling to remote African destinations ought to have with them. --"Toby Green"

Summary: A bold, powerful, wonderful book: part satire, part a look into the future, and part a warning about where we are. Michael Young's life is a rich and varied one filled with commitment and engagement and this 1958 essay is a milestone in a life filled wth them. This book is written in a future Britain 2033 - which in many regards does not look that different from the present day. There are no real differences between the parties. The Labour Party as we understand it has been abolished. Education is everything in terms of getting on. Tests and measuring ability are the governing credo. And yet this future world is not a fairer or happier place. Instead, those who are the winners in this world do so because of a narrower and narrower notion of 'ability' and 'merit' - which they see as virtuous and because they are somehow better. Seeing their individual success as a validation of their skills they see their lifestories as a success, and those who do not make it a failure. Funnily enough, power, money and politics congregate around this 'new class', while the excluded majority - are leaderless and have no political party to represent them in the way the working class was once represented by Labour. It is in this respects Young argues that Labour is dead, and that his essay - forty years before the event - foretold the story of New Labour and its ultimate demise. Fascinatingly, Young's essay has been completely misunderstood by not just Thatcher's children, but Wilson's before her, and Blair's children to come look likely to do the same. Young gave the the world the concept of 'meritocracy', but Thatcher/Blair et al, have consistently seen it as a positive concept when it is anything but. To Young, 'meritocracy' was the process by which the 'new class' validated its power and position. It is no accident that our politicians go on about 'meritocracy' and shed crocodile tears for the demise of social mobility, and fail to understand their part in aiding, reinforcing and legitimising this state of affairs. This book is one of the most original, fascinating and challenging written about 20th century Britain and the problems and dangers in society and politics today. Rather than reading 'Blink' or 'Nudge' - the second rate soundbite sloganeering which passes for thought in our political classes today - why not read a really provoking book?

Summary: I actually found this book whilst browsing the shelves in a thrift shop in a village in England. I liked the look of the title and it cost me the princely sum of 50 pence sterling. What a find - Yutang's words of wisdom often comfort when the world seems like its turning upside down. This book has been on many of my travels, I often recommend it to friends hoping they'll get as much out of the prose as I did. In a Global World that seems to be moving ever faster - its a pleasure to take time off, relax and philosophize with the Author. This book is never far from hand, I often re-read chapters when in need of inspiration. Kick of the shackles, open up the pages, spark one up and spend some time alone - you'll be a wiser and more tolerant human being for having read this book.
